Kitson earns U's a point

Dave Kitson's glancing header helped Oxford battle back to earn a 1-1 draw at promotion rivals Fleetwood.

Steven Schumacher's curling free-kick gave the home side the lead in the 12th minute, the midfielder lifting it over the wall and into the top corner after Nathan Tyson had been felled by Johnny Mullins

And he should have added a second to his account before the break, sliding in to get on the end of a Gareth Evans cross, only to send the ball fizzing over the bar.

Oxford battled back after the break and could have levelled when first James Constable's shot was blocked by Nathan Pond then goalkeeper Scott Davies denied Ryan Williams on the rebound before Schumacher hacked Kitson's effort off the line.

Asa Hall sent one flying past the post from the edge of the box as Fleetwood lived dangerously.

Kitson was again denied, rising to head from a David Hunt cross, and with 10 minutes remaining he tumbled in the box and Darren Bond awarded a penalty. Former Fleetwood man Danny Rose stepped up but Davies guessed right to deny his former team-mate.

But Oxford's persistence paid off at the death, Kitson getting just enough on Hunt's ball from the right to turn it past the Fleetwood keeper and earn a point for the U's.
